STATEMENT
“Ablandar la ciudad” [concepto]
Apropiación directa de la ciudad a través de instalaciones efímeras de sitio específico que aprovechan la arquitectura preexistente para la creación de un espacio del común; un intersticio entre lo público y lo privado donde sea posible coexistir por fuera de las lógicas del patriarcado neoliberal y congregar a los cuerpos de la ciudad más allá de las rígidas barreras que los separan.
Este ablandamiento expone la naturaleza dura de las ciudades y al mismo tiempo devela su susceptibilidad a ser subvertidas y resignificadas en un tiempo y espacio determinados. Para ablandar la ciudad conviene trabajar con materiales blandos que difieran del carácter perdurable y tosco del mobiliario urbano; materiales resistentes, pero altamente flexibles que permitan desarrollar obras ligeras y económicas de rápida instalación y que puedan ser trasladadas en un bolso o cartera. Pero la resistencia que le otorga la flexibilidad a estas instalaciones no solo es material, sino también política. El ablandamiento que se propone no es uno de tipo ‘blandengue’, que maquille las problemáticas urbanas con un estuco de alegría y distracción. Lo que se busca al ablandar una ciudad es despertar la sensibilidad crítica y el sentido de agencia de lxs ciudadanxs al animar el potencial subversivo del deseo, el juego y los afectos.

"Softening the city" [concept].
Direct appropriation of the city through ephemeral site-specific installations that take advantage of pre-existing architecture for the creation of a space of the commons; an interstice between the public and the private where it is possible to coexist outside the logics of neoliberal patriarchy and congregate the bodies of the city beyond the rigid barriers that separate them.
This softening exposes the hard nature of cities and at the same time reveals their susceptibility to be subverted and re-signified in a given time and space. In order to soften the city, it is convenient to work with soft materials that differ from the enduring and rough character of urban furniture; resistant but highly flexible materials that allow the development of light and economical works that can be installed quickly and can be carried in a bag or purse. But the resistance that gives flexibility to these installations is not only material, but also political. The proposed softening is not one of a 'soft' type, which disguises urban problems with a stucco of joy and distraction. What is sought in softening a city is to awaken the critical sensibility and sense of agency of citizens by encouraging the subversive potential of desire, play and affection.
